A Santa Clarita orthodontist is talking about why someone who has noticed their gums have mild bleeding while flossing shouldn’t take a break from flossing as a result.

“That small bleeding is actually the early stages of gingivitis,” said Dr. Megan LeCornu of Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics. “It’s because there’s a low-level infection in your gums, so as you clean them, your body’s way of trying to get rid of that mild infection is to kind of purge it out.”

LeCornu encourages anyone who notices their gums bleeding after flossing to keep at it diligently, and even gently brush the gums until they become healthy again, which can take anywhere from two to three weeks.

“The gums will be nice and pink and tight and healthy if you’re a good flosser,” LeCornu said.

For those who find it a challenge to use traditional floss regularly, LeCornu recommends a water flosser known as the Waterpik.

“We are finding that our patients who use the Waterpik over floss seem to do a little bit better of a job in not having gingivitis,” she said. “I honestly think it’s just because the water flosser or Waterpik is a lot easier for them to use than traditional floss.”
