Without proper dental care, plaque buildup and other more severe problems can occur. One of the consequences of improper oral care is gum disease, gingivitis and tooth decay. One of the leading causes of gum disease is plaque. Plaque is a film that builds up along the gum line and traps food and germs. Once plaque settles in, it begins attacking your gums which causes soreness and bleeding.
The second and more serious stage in gum disease is called periodontitis. Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis has been left untreated and has progressed to this next level. As a result your teeth will become swollen and form pockets that can collect food particles and may become infected. If not treated your teeth will begin to loosen, resulting in tooth loss.
To avoid gum disease and tooth decay all together, brush, floss and rinse with fluoride everyday and visit your dentist for checkups regularly.
