“We want to be very visible in the community,” explained Sharits. “We have billboards up, we have Facebook, we have Instagram stuff going, we’re doing as many talks and events and stuff that we can do in the community.”

Jeanette Barreto, outreach coordinator at the rehabilitation organization Phoenix House, adds that building on this network and creating contacts makes it possible to connect those in need with services.

“There’s this mixture of going out and talking about our programs through presentations and connecting with other service providers,” said Barreto. “The reality is, we’re a large organization but we’re not going to reach every single person or (we) may not be the best fit for every single person who needs services.”

Sharits discusses how, through social media, organizations are always up for review, which he sees as a good thing and a way for everybody to improve. He also notes that the internet is a way for other businesses to reach out and connect.

“That’s the direction we’re moving in,” adds Baretto. “Phoenix House, probably over the last couple years, hasn’t been as visible out in the community. We’ve had it out there but we’re really driving it a lot more. And also it’s boots on the ground right now across the nation … so that we can have that face-to-face contact with other providers, with the community, so that they know how to connect directly with Phoenix house.”

“Whether or not we can serve you, we’re going to sit down with you and make sure that you get the help that you need,” promised Sharits. “I think that the face of substance abuse treatment and treatment organizations and the way that we work together is dramatically changing that way.”

Sharits ends by reminding the community that asking for help is the first step to recovery:

“It’s hard for us to do that on our own — myself and many of the people that work at The Way Out are also in recovery,” concludes Sharits. “It took us asking other people for help in order to change our lives, and we want to pass that on to anybody who’s out there.”
