Understanding And Dealing With Diabetes

PillsThe National Diabetes Association recently released a fact sheet that listed startling facts about diabetes in America. The data presents that while 18.8 million people in America have been diagnosed with diabetes, 7 million are undiagnosed. What is even scarier is that 79 million people in America today have pre-diabetes. That is approximately 79 million people at risk for a serious health issue.

How can you know if you are at risk for diabetes. Let’s first learn a little bit more about what diabetes actually is.

There are three types of diabetes—pre-diabetes, type 1 diabetes, and more commonly, type 2 diabetes.

Pre-Diabetes occurs in people who develop type 2 diabetes and consists of blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in children and adults and occurs when the body does not produce insulin, the hormones needed to convert sugar into energy. Symptoms include frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, and fatigue.

The most common type of diabetes is Type 2.  It can occur when the body either does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore insulin.  This type of diabetes carries the same symptoms as type 1 plus frequent infections, blurred vision, cuts or bruises that are slow to heal, and tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.

Sarah Carmona, pharmacist-in-charge at Valencia Pharmacy mentioned that only pre-diabetes can be prevented by making changes in diet—eating lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dried beans, fish, non-fat dairy products, and calorie-free drinks. Also increasing physical activity to 30 minutes a day if not doing so already and reducing your body weight by 5-10%.

Diabetes can lead to other complications including glaucoma or cataracts, neuropathy, heart disease, oral health problems, kidney disease, and stroke so it is important to check in with your physician and go over your risk factors and treatment plans.
