Support groups, educational materials, seminars and more centered around Alzheimer’s and dementia are regularly offered at the center — many of which are completely free — and Home Care Services President Rick Ferrante wants the community to know what’s available.

“There’s constant stuff going on,” Ferrante said, noting that his team wants to do more than fundraise for the cause — they want to help their friends, neighbors and families right here in the Santa Clarita Valley.

“It’s happening,” he continued. “Stuff is happening out there, so now my message is, take advantage of it — so much of it is free. It’s just really valuable information and it’s for various stages.”

The resources available go beyond just realizing the signs of Alzheimer’s, and focus in depth on some concrete, practical things an individual, husband, wife, son or daughter can do for their loved one, whether they’re in the early, middle or late stages of the disease.

“Do you know the average length of time somebody has this disease?” Ferrante asked. “Eight to 10 years. It’s staggering… This is a long journey, so if I am in this, I need help for a long period of time, and there are different things depending on the stage.”

In addition to providing resources to help maintain quality of life for the person living with Alzheimer’s, support groups are also available for the friends and family of that person for their own emotional wellbeing.

“It is so satisfying to say, okay, this is what we brought, is somebody to be able to kind of recognize and start ticking off little tricks and tips and things like that,” Ferrante said, “and (to realize), ‘Hey, this isn’t just me. This happens to a lot of people and will continue to happen to a lot of people,’ and the feeling that they have when they walk out of there is better than when they came in.”
