Heart Attack Survivor Helps Raise Awareness Of Heart Disease

Santa Clarita resident Dean Oshiro never thought he was at risk for a heart attack.

“I always thought if you stayed in physical shape, there’s very little risk of having any type of problems,” said Oshiro, an officer for the Santa Monica Police Department.

But, on August 20, 2010, the 45-year-old had a heart attack that nearly killed him.  Now, after making major lifestyle changes and learning more about the disease, Oshiro is participating in the American Heart Association’s Los Angeles County Heart Walk on October 15 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Oshiro says that being at the walk to share his story is important to him because, “The more people that can be aware of the many different risk factors, I think the better prepared they are and maybe we can reduce the amount of heart disease in the nation.”

The walk aims to raise awareness and funds toward the mission of building healthier lives, free of heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.  More than 5,000 people are expected to participate in the 5k walk/run.

At the event, there will be free hands-only CPR demos and blood pressure screenings.  There will be a lively dance warm-up and post-walk performances by local talents.

Heart disease and strokes are the number one and number four killers in America, claiming more than 831,000 lives each year.  The American Heart Association aims to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20 percent by the year 2020.

Registration for the walk begins at 8 a.m., the opening ceremony at 9 a.m., and the walk/run at 9:30 a.m. on October 15.  The Rose Bowl is located at 1001 Rose Bowl Drive, Pasadena.
