Help A Charity? Go Jump In The Lake

Polar-Plunge-Bear-2012-Purple-FINALThe temperature outside might be warming up, but one thing is for sure – the waters of Castaic Lake are pretty cold. That’s why everyone is invited to leave their wetsuits and boogie boards at home, grab their friends and family and go jump in the lake – for a great cause.

The annual Polar Plunge benefiting the Special Olympics is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 18 at the west ramp of the lake. Costumed swimmers are encouraged and participants raising a minimum of $50 get their official Plunge T-shirt. Those raising more qualify for additional prizes.

“Last year, we had mermaids, cowboys, an Elvis sighting and a Speedo team” said Laura Mayo, Special Olympics Regional Director.  “I can’t wait to see what the teams come up with this year.”

To build up your stamina, the Lions Club will whip up pancakes for breakfast, starting at 8:30 a.m., which is also when registration opens. Swimmers will jump in the lake at 10 a.m. sharp.

“Taking the plunge is a unique way for individuals, groups, and corporations to support our athletes,” said Bill Shumard, President and CEO of Special Olympics Southern California.  “Our lake is cold in February, so brave souls can cross this off their bucket list and raise money for our athletes at the same time.”

Special Olympics Southern California has been changing lives for more than 40 years and offers opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to participate in year-round sports training and competition.  Nearly 11,000 athletes in 11 counties participate in Southern California.  Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self confidence and more positive self image.
