The rehabilitation center has been expanded by at least three times what it was before, said Dorinda Perez, clinical coordinator of the cardiac rehab center.

A patient might benefit from access to the center if they have had open heart surgery, has had a heart attack or has had a stent placed, Perez said.

“We’re really excited that this very necessary asset to the community was funded,” Perez said. “Center’s like this are not always profitable, so we’re happy that this center’s necessity was recognized.”

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital officials want to increase awareness about how useful and important the center is, and let people know that it’s not just for Henry Mayo patients, Perez said. Residents from anywhere might be eligible to access it.

The center is an emphasis on exercise coupled with education, the latter part being the most important, Perez said.

“Patients can exercise anywhere,” Perez said, but the education provided about modifying your lifestyle, understanding your risk factors, stress management, learning to know when you should contact your doctor and most importantly — how to avoid re-hospitalization is essential.”

The program provided at the center is three months long and is paid for by most insurance companies, Perez said. A patient will generally begin the process by wearing a heart monitor to detect any abnormalities.

The grand opening of the center’s presentation highlighted a patient who was close to graduating the three month program, and it chronicled his story about recovery and rehabilitation, Perez said.

His change is documented in the youtube video below:
