Henry Mayo’s New Helipad Approved For Touchdown

Henry_Mayo_HelipadHenry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital received final approval from Caltrans and the Los Angeles Emergency Medical Services Agency, Department of Health Services on Monday for patient delivery to the hospital’s new helipad atop the recently completed parking structure.

The new addition allows Henry Mayo to hold on to its designation as the only trauma center in the Santa Clarita Valley. According to Dr. David Henry, Emergency Services, the hospital receives 50-70 code trauma patients per month from hospital walk-ins and ambulance transport. Now, with the new helipad, Henry estimates the hospital will receive 10-15 of those patients by air transport.

President and CEO of Henry Mayo, Roger E. Seaver, said the add-on will provide timesaving, and thus life-saving, opportunities for the hospital and its staff.

“With the helipad, and working with our local emergency air transporters, we’ll be able to provide life-saving care to our most critical patients in a timely manner,” Seaver said. “Often times, prompt treatment for trauma patients can mean the difference between life and death.”

The addition comes six years after the closure of Henry Mayo’s last helipad. The previous pad was closed to allow room for the connecting corridor of the hospital’s expanded emergency room that began construction on September 19, 2005. At the time, the pad received between 5 and 10 patients per month.

Prior to the opening of the new helipad, Henry Mayo emergency and security department responders were trained to use and work with the pad in order to take full advantage of the opportunity it provides for greater efficiency in trauma care, according to Nurse Teri Sullivan, co-training coordinator at Henry Mayo.

Early last month, the L.A City and County fire and sheriff’s departments provided helicopters to Henry Mayo to help the hospital train its staff on their proper use.

According to Laura Young, Public Relations Manager for Henry Mayo, the pad has yet to receive its first landing but the hospital will now be prepared when the need arises.
