“Halloween is just around the corner and most families are excited and eager to participate in the long-standing tradition of children dressing in costumes and walking door-to-door throughout the community to get treats,” Johnson said in a nixle message sent to community members on Thursday.
“While we are eager to observe this tradition, here is an important statistic to keep in mind: children are four times more likely to be struck by a car on Halloween night than any other night of the year. The city of Santa Clarita and the unincorporated communities of the Santa Clarita Valley are sending the message, ‘slow down and watch for children’ on Halloween.”
Johnson went on to offer the following safety tips:
Motorists
- Remain alert – there are thousands of children walking in the community wearing clothing that may not be bright in color
- Look for children darting out from and between parked cars
- Use caution when entering and exiting your driveway
- Above all, slow down while driving in the community
Parents
- Ask your children to walk instead of run
- Select a costume for your child to wear that has bright colors
- Ensure your children only visit well-lit streets
- Stay on the sidewalk, look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks
