Holy Cross Opens Special Room For Heart Patients

New room will help free up Cardiac Cath Labs

Providence Holy Cross has opened a Specials Room that not only expands the medical center’s interventional cardiology program for the third time in less than two years, but also provides additional vascular services and frees up its busy operating rooms for other procedures.

The Specials Room has special equipment that provides interventional and imaging procedures from head to toe. This frees up operating time in the other two cath labs, ensuring that emergency heart attack victims and other patients receive intervention as quickly as possible.

The opening of the Specials Rooms opens scheduling so that procedures such as pacemaker and defibrillator implants can be done in the cath labs, thereby allowing other surgeries to be performed in the medical center’s operating rooms.

In November 2005 Providence Holy Cross opened a second cath lab to serve the growing need of heart patients in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys.  In the summer of 2006, it then completed renovations of its original cath lab.

In January 2007, Providence Holy Cross became one of the first 12 hospitals in Los Angeles County to be designated a specialty center for acute heart attack patients.  One of the qualifications to receiving this designation (known as a STEMI Receiving Center) is ensuring quick intervention to open a heart attack patient’s artery through angioplasty in the cath lab.

As a STEMI Receiving Center, the hospital has on call at all times an interventional cardiologist and a cardiovascular surgeon who can be promptly available 24 hours a day.

“Providence Holy Cross is well known as a major trauma center not only for heart attack victims but for those injured in a car accident or disaster,” said Samuel Kojoglanian, M.D., a Cardiologist on the Medical Staff at Providence Holy Cross.   “The Specials Room becomes a vital addition to our trauma and emergency services by providing more availability of our cath labs and operating rooms, especially during simultaneous trauma and cardiac events.  Our goal is to have greater availability translate into increased saved lives.”

Besides making cath labs and operating rooms more available, the Specials Room has the capabilities for physicians to do a wide variety of interventional and imaging procedures for heart, vascular and gastrointestinal patients.  The room has larger imaging receptors than other cath labs to provide a one-shot interior view of the body from abdomen to the feet, as well as special vascular images of the head.  It can also be used for gastrointestinal procedures, such as swallow studies.
