I realize that this is a ridiculously simple dessert suggestion, but when you don’t have a refrigerator you have to think fast!!
Our son was visiting from Northern California and a group of his friends came by to spend some time with him. These are the same young men who as children left their skate boards on our lawn, who sat in my kitchen in their army fatigues drinking Irish Breakfast tea and yes, the same ones that made a tornado of fire by my screen door so they could blow up a green plastic army man….happy times!
I made a quick trip to Sabor Latino to get burger supplies and something for dessert. I ended up buying a few bottles of Jarritos Mandarin soda, a small container of vanilla ice cream and of course, more ice!
When I was a kid I would sit on the curb in front of our house on summer evenings with a nickel in my hand and wait for the Good Humor ice cream truck to come by. My absolute favorite ice cream was a 50/50 bar! So I thought, hey, how about 50/50 floats? Everyone enjoyed the dessert even though the ice cream was a bit softer than I would have liked and we had a great time reminiscing and laughing about all their childhood antics….yeah, I can laugh now! I am happy to say that no plastic army men were harmed during this gathering…..
I divided one 12.5 oz. bottle of Jarritos Mandarin orange soda between two 16 oz. glasses and added two scoops of vanilla ice cream, yum! My daughter suggested that next time we have whipped cream as a topping for the floats, good idea now that we have a refrigerator.
