Homicide Investigators Awaiting More Test Results In Saugus Case

khts_crimeInvestigators are awaiting toxicology results in the death of Karla Brada, which should be available some time in the next two weeks.

Sheriff’s homicide Lt. Eduardo Hernandez said that the Coroner has conducted an autopsy on Brada, but that results of lab work which could offer some answers as to her specific cause of death are still forthcoming.

Brada’s live-in boyfriend, Eric Earle, was initially arrested on suspicion of murder the day her body was found, but was released six days later because of insufficient evidence.

Deputies were called to the Saugus condominium they shared on the morning of September 1 after Earle woke up and found Brada unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene by L.A. County Fire personnel and homicide investigators took over the case.

Whether Earle, who has been arrested for domestic violence and vandalizing a patrol car within the last month, is re-arrested and charged depends on the tests currently being conducted.

“Earle was released because of insufficient evidence,” explained Hernandez. “But if the Coroner determines it was homicide, we know that he is still in the area. Investigators have tracked down family members and we know he’s still in the Los Angeles area. We would take the information and get a warrant.”

Hernandez said that the tests could determine that Brada’s death was accidental or caused by other conditions, such as an overdose or heart failure. If homicide is ruled out by the Coroner, the investigation would shift to the Coroner’s office, who would look into Barda’s background and try to pin point the exact cause.

“If it’s a homicide, we definitely would take the lead and continue our criminal investigation,” he said.
