Hot Days Pose Safety Risk

City issues safety tips

Heat safety is the July feature for the City of Santa Clarita’s 12 months of Personal Preparedness.

In Santa Clarita, temperatures exceeding 100 degrees are not uncommon during the summer and fall. During an average summer, some 200 people across the country die due to heat injuries from exposure to high summer temperatures.

“During a heat wave, it’s important to keep yourself cool at air-conditioned facilities such as the community centers, public libraries, the mall. If you’re looking for an affordable way to stay cool during the heat wave, grab your towel and swimsuit and head out to one of the City’s five different community aquatics facilities,” commented City Emergency Services Supervisor Donna Nuzzi.

To prevent heat injuries: avoid the sun from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. when the burning rays are strongest; reduce physical activity; and wear a wide-brimmed hat and light colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothes when you are outdoors to reflect heat and sunlight so you can maintain a normal body temperature.

Additionally, avoid hot, heavy meals that include proteins; set your air conditioning thermostat between 75 and 80 degrees; drink plenty of fluids, even if you are not thirsty; and use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 if you need to go out in the sun.

The 12 months of Personal Preparedness is designed to increase resident’s awareness and preparedness on what to do in the event of a specific emergency or disaster.

Each month throughout the year, the City and KHTS will promote news stories and interviews focusing on improving preparedness with the City Manager, Mayor, and City Councilmembers.
