“Where are the poles?” and “Where are the dogs?”  Those are the two most commonly asked questions by visitors to fire stations, Battalion Chief Gary Burden said Saturday. . .

     Poles only exist in two-story facilities and fire stations no longer have dogs due to liability issues, Burden told visitors during a tour of Fire Station No. 126 in Valencia.
    Fire stations around the Santa Clarita Valley and Los Angeles County opened their doors to the community in celebration of “Fire Service” month on Saturday.
    Preschoolers and adults listened as Burden and other firefighters explained what they do for a living.
    “We encourage everyone to come,” Burden said.
    When asked if the shifts were grueling, Burden said, “It’s our home away from home.”
    Often firefighters will work a 24-hour shift and then be off for a shift.
    The tour of 15 preschool children and their parents lasted 30 minutes.
