The event, which was held at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex, featured athletes such as MMA legend John McCarthy, former NBAer Tony Farmer and The Kings Ice Crew, among others.

They were joined by local athletes from Trinity Classical Academy, The Master’s College, Golden Valley, Hart, West Ranch, Valencia, Saugus and Canyon high schools, all shooting with the same goal to shoot more than 12,000 baskets, doubling last year’s goal.

The reason for shooting at least 6,000 baskets is because every day 6,000 children join the already 15 million people worldwide who have become orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

At the inaugural shoot-a-thon, the goal of shooting more than 6,000 was completed, which was more than doubled at the second annual event, where 12,198 baskets were made.

Hoops of Hope was created in 2004 by then-10-year-old Austin Gutwein with the hope of providing comfort to kids orphaned due to AIDS, and is now the biggest basketball free-throw marathon in the world, according to a news release.

The event was filled with fun contests geared toward raising even more funds such as, the half-court shot made by Hart football player Connor Wingenroth securing a $250 donation for the basket.

Many local sponsors helped to make the event a huge success, such as Nissan of Valencia, Southern California Orthopedic Institute, and Brian P. Jacobs, Senior Vice President of Morgan Stanley.

These local sponsors were joined by AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Los Angeles Clippers Foundation, and Northrop Grumman. The In-N-Out truck was also present to feed the participants and guests who worked up an appetite shooting away.

A great silent auction took place with amazing gifts, such as a NHL hockey puck signed by Stanley Cup-winner Jonathon Quick, Lakers gear signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and NBA Logo himself Jerry West, as well as L.A. Galaxy tickets and L.A. Galaxy gear signed by Landon Donovan and much more.
