Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry in search of volunteers

Whether it’s a high school student looking for volunteer hours or simply a philanthropist desiring to help people in need, the Santa Clarita Food Pantry provides ample opportunities for residents to aid the community.

Distributing food to about 950 families in Santa Clarita each month, the Pantry aims to guarantee that no child goes to bed hungry. However, the extent of help the organization can provide is contingent on donations from the community.

“We only have two paid, part-time employees of the food pantry,” stated Belinda Crawford, executive director of the Santa Clarita Food Pantry. “So if we couldn’t find volunteers such as drivers, we would not be able to pick up food at some of the locations.”

With the current downturn in the economy, the Pantry has seen a dramatic increase in need.

“In 2008 we had a sixty percent increase over 2007 in the number of unduplicated clients,” Belinda explained. “We’ve seen a forty-eight percent increase this year over last year.”

Currently, the pantry is in need of drivers who can help pick up donations from local markets on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.

“We always need substitute drivers as well, when people go on vacation or one thing or another,” Belinda said.

While the pantry’s biggest current need is drivers, they also need food and monetary donations. Typically, the Santa Clarita Food Pantry runs low on stocks of bar soap, tuna, macaroni and cheese, plastic grocery bags, peanut butter, and beans.

Interested organizations can also help by holding food drives.
