As regional chief executive of Providence California , he will oversee the five Providence medical centers in the Greater Los Angeles Area as well as numerous facilities including outpatient centers, long-term care facilities, physician organizations and a high school.

“Michael brings more than 20 years of experience leading healthcare teams in California ,” said John F. Koster, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the Renton , Wash.-based Providence . “Michael will provide continuity to the work of the Providence mission and direct the strategic priorities of the region now and into the future.”

Hunn replaces Arnold R. Schaffer, who was promoted earlier this year to senior vice president of regional operations for the Providence system.

With more than 12,000 employees, physicians and volunteers, Providence California is anchored by Providence Holy Cross, Providence Saint Joseph and Providence Tarzana medical centers in the San Fernando Valley and Providence Little Company of Mary medical centers in Torrance and San Pedro.

“I am so honored and so humbled to be entrusted with this position, leading one of the finest healthcare organizations in California ,” Hunn said. “It’s my goal to keep Providence at the forefront of patient care and to continue to attract the most dedicated physicians, board members, foundation members, staff and volunteers who are called to serve in our ministries.”

Providence , founded more than 150 years ago by the Sisters of Providence, operates healthcare, education and housing programs in California , Oregon , Washington , Montana and Alaska . Aside from the award-winning medical centers in California , regional operations include TrinityCare and Trinity KidsCare Hospice programs, Providence High School in Burbank, Providence Medical Institute and numerous long-term care and outpatient facilities.

Proceeds from many of these enterprises are invested in the community to help low-income families, children, immigrants, the homeless and others in need. It is the mission of Providence to reach out to the poor and vulnerable.

“The mission and our core values are the cornerstone of Providence , and our outreach programs are an integral part of what we do to help improve health care in the communities we serve,” Hunn said.

Providence is committed to excellence and compassion in meeting the healthcare needs of a growing – and aging – population.

Two years ago, Providence expanded in the San Fernando Valley, acquiring the former Tarzana Regional Medical Center . At Providence Saint Joseph, the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center opened in February and early next year Providence Holy Cross Medical Center will open a 138-bed expansion.

Under Hunn’s leadership, the medical center in Torrance opened Los Angeles County ’s first neonatal intensive care unit with state-of-the-art individual rooms for each baby or set of twins. Providence also is expanding in the South Bay with a new medical office complex and an improved women’s imaging center.

Hunn, who lives in Orange County , has two children. He is involved in numerous advocacy, business and civic organizations, and in January will begin a three-year term on the board of the California Hospital Association.
