In a unanimous decision, the William S. Hart District School Board voted late last night to rename the Canyon High School Athletic Stadium, the Harry Welch Stadium.
The stadium has been renamed for the Canyon Cowboy football coach who led the Canyon Cowboys to a victory at the State Championship this season. Coach Welch has been a teacher at Canyon High School for the past 37 years.
A large amount of Welch supporters showed up at the school board meeting to advocate for the new name. They came equipped with pages of signatures in favor of the change that were collected at various areas in Santa Clarita.
There were a few people who spoke out against putting Coach Welch’s name on the stadium, and they argued that they did not have sufficient time to organize a presentation.
The board made their decision based on their belief that this is what the public wants.
Board Member Steve Sturgeon said that the name change isn’t necessarily permanent. He brought up an example of when he was at Granada High when the football stadium was named after the school’s principal. Now the stadium carries the name of perhaps its most famous athletic alumni, John Elway.
