Attention employers, your best bet may be to hire a vet. That’s the message from the San Fernando Valley Veteran’s Employment Committee.
On Thursday, June 9, 2011, they are hosting their 2nd Annual Veterans Employment and Resource Expo at the Department of the Army | California Army National Guard, located at 17330 Victory Blvd. in Van Nuys.
Committee Chair E.J. Steele told KHTS with veterans struggling in the current economy they want to provide even more services this year, “That includes helping veterans translate their military resumes or MOS (military operation specialty) into terminology an employer would better understand.”

The event runs from 10 a.m to 2:00 p.m.
The SFV Veteran’s Employment Committee believes that with a new venue and expanded services, this year will be even better. The follow benefits will be offered:
ResumeBank – Collection of registered job seeker resumes online for their new resume bank.
On-site Interviews – Employers will have the ability and opportunity to screen job seekers during the event.
Enrollment – The Veterans Administration will assess veterans and determine their benefit status/eligibility.
Haircuts/Manicures – Western Beauty Institute will provide these services for job seekers.
Prizes/Giveaways – We are giving away door prizes to registered job-seekers. (You must register online to participate in the giveaway.)
Veterans Affairs medical personnel will also be on hand to perform medical assessments and conduct onsite enrollments. “That’s the first time that’s ever been done,” Steel said.
At last year’s event 500 prospective applicants showed up, 50% of them veterans.
The San Fernando Valley Veterans Employment Committee is an all-volunteer organization that works in partnership with various federal and state agencies, employers, training institutions and nonprofit entities. Its purpose is to serve as an employment-focused “network” for veterans, their spouses and children.
Employment is their focus, but they also seek to raise community awareness and support of veterans/military families returning from service. Assistance to veterans is free of charge.
