Kelly’s Krew Hits Marathon Course To Support Friend With Leukemia

KellyKrewpicSeveral runners in Sunday’s marathon are hitting the road with a friend in mind – they’re even wearing identical turquoise T-shirts, identifying them as Kelly’s Krew.

Kelly Gogerty is a Santa Clarita mother who works with her husband cleaning homes and businesses, but her friends define her not by what she does for a living, but how she lives her life. They see a supportive parent, an accomplished horsewoman, a good friend – the kind of person you want at your side in an emergency.

Gogerty is facing an emergency of her own – a recent diagnosis of leukemia. On Monday, she will begin chemotherapy and undergo a bone marrow transplant in the hopes of beating the disease.

KellyKrewlogoKelly’s Krew – made up of friends Beth Cooke, Patty Nelson, Christine McGuan, Allison Hanlon, Jennifer McGuan, Cassidy Nelson, Nina Hernandez and Danny Hernandez  – are running the half-marathon Sunday in honor of and to raise funds for their good friend.

“I’ve known her for seven years now; our daughters do cheer together at California Flyers,” said Cooke. “We found out a month ago that she had leukemia and had to start immediately with chemo. We knew we needed to do something.”

Running the half-marathon was Nelson’s brainchild, Cooke explained, as she had run with Team In Training a few years back to raise money for a young boy with leukemia.

They’ve had a few donations and hope that spreading the news about the website might help. The women seem focused on making sure that Kelly’s daughter has a little bit of normal while her mother deals with her illness.

“Her husband is working three jobs, but I don’t know how he can keep up with that, when she’s in the hospital and he has to go back and forth,” Cooke said.

“She is an awesome friend, an awesome person, a great mom,” she continued. “She has a 13 year old daughter who’s going through this with her and we’re trying to make sure the daughter gets to stay in cheerleading so that she’s really busy during this time.”

“Although Kelly has a supportive family and good friends to keep her spirits up, she has been self-employed cleaning homes for the past few years, enabling her to spend more time with her daughter,” said Cooke. “This has left her in the position of not only losing her income but also of being ineligible for disability.  We would like to help the family by making sure that the stress and emotional turmoil of this disease and treatment is not made worse by the drastic altering of their economic situation.”
