A special needs kitten named Faith was adopted not long after taking the spotlight in the “KHTS Adopt a Pet” series last year, and Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary is asking for donations on GoFundMe to help her new family pay for a necessary surgery.

Now about 1 year and 3 months, Faith was born with severely under-formed eyelids, which creates a variety of problems for Faith, including poor depth perception, being prone to corneal abrasions and the need for daily lubricating eye drops.
“But the biggest hurdle by far is that her eyelashes point inward, constantly irritating and scratching the surface of Faith’s eyes,” the GoFundMe page states. “As she’s gotten bigger, an extra ‘thread’ of eyelashes has even grown in vertically across both eyes, obstructing her vision and causing even more irritation.”

While Faith hasn’t suffered any permanent damage from her condition — called eyelid agenesis — apart from a buildup of scar tissue so far, she is now old enough for the surgery that will both protect her eyes from future damage and help make her far more comfortable in daily life.
“Now that Faith is about a year old and big enough for corrective surgery, the extra ‘threads’ of lashes need to be completely removed, and in order to protect her corneas from further damage and give her relief from the constant irritation, Faith also needs one to two rounds of cryosurgery to permanently remove her lashes by freezing,” the GoFundMe page states.
After Faith’s new family partnered with the animal rescue that saved her from the shelter, Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary, to see a number of veterinary eye specialists in recent months, they have chosen Dr. Michael Chang of VCA West Los Angeles to perform the surgery.

Just one cryosurgery procedure is estimated to cost between $2,215 and $2,658, according to the VCA West LA surgery invoice posted on the GoFundMe page.
About $1,000 has been raised via the GoFundMe page for Faith’s surgery so far, and the first cryosurgery procedure will be scheduled as soon as the remaining funds are raised.
“We were lucky enough to find Faith a loving forever home with her foster sibling (now sister) Hope, but that was only half the battle,” the page states. “Making sure Faith gets the surgery she needs for her eyelid agenesis so she can live the most comfortable, healthiest and happiest life possible is our focus now.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series
Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase nearly 100 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 76 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Melissa Lampert-Abramovitch, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
