KHTS Adopt A Pet: Hamlet & Bonita, St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary (VIDEO)

Bonded huskies Hamlet and Bonita were taken in by St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary when Bonita was pregnant with Hamlet’s puppies. All of their puppies have since been adopted, and St. Bonnie’s staff are looking for the perfect home for the mother-father duo.

“Their owner was turning them into the Lancaster Animal Shelter because they were moving,” said Megan Haselwood, a St. Bonnie’s adoption counselor. “We said we’re going to take the whole family, so they came here.”

Hamlet is now 3 years old and Bonita is 2 years old, and the pair is coming up on their one-year anniversary at St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary this November.

When staff initially tried to separate them, Hamlet became depressed and stopped eating, making it clear that he and his mate need to stay together.

“We put them back together again and they’ve been happy ever since,” Haselwood said. “So it is a buy-one-get-one-free for them, so the whole price for both of them is $250, and hopefully we can find the right home.”

Though they have lots of energy and can be rambunctious when they play, Hamlet and Bonita proved to be good house dogs in their foster home, and get along well with other dogs too.

“They love to play, they love to be in the yard, they love to be in the house as well — they love couch time, they love snuggle time,” Haselwood said. “They’re just amazing dogs.”

The ideal adopters for Hamlet and Bonita would be an active person or family who can get their energy out on runs, hikes, or long walks.

“They have been here since November of last year, so it will be their anniversary,” Haselwood said. “Hopefully we can get them home before then.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series

Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 40 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 30 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Features Director Melissa Lampert, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
