A one-eared German Shepherd named Krieger has been waiting for his forever home for almost two years at Tails and Scales Animal Rescue, and has transformed into an entirely different dog than when he first caught the rescue’s eye at the shelter.

Founder/CEO Haley Walsh was walking the kennels at West Valley Animal Shelter in 2016 when she spotted Krieger, a heartbreaking look of defeat on his face as he stood against his kennel door and stuck his long nose through the bars.
“When I approached his kennel, he gave me the saddest face and put his face up to the bars, and I knew I had to rescue him,” Walsh recalled. “When I told the front desk at the shelter that I wanted to pull him, they actually told me, ‘No, you don’t want that dog.’”

But Walsh’s mind was already made up, and she saved the clearly traumatized boy’s life, placing him in a Tails and Scales foster home.
“He didn’t know what being pet was, he didn’t know what being in the house was. He didn’t understand human companionship or dog companionship,” Walsh said. “But now that he’s been with us, he’s really blossomed into a wonderful dog.”
Now full of energy and incredibly outgoing and affectionate, a few of Krieger’s favorite things to do are play fetch with his deflated basketball and sit in Walsh’s lap for pets.
“Krieger is a big, dorky, lovable dog,” Walsh said. “Through all the years of rescue, Krieger has to be one of my favorite dogs I’ve ever saved.”
Last year, Krieger unfortunately had to have one of his ears amputated after several attempts to repair a hematoma failed, but it doesn’t affect him at all today.
Because of his large size and high energy, Krieger would do best in an adults-only home, and gets along with other dogs who don’t mind what Walsh called his “fun police” play style.
“He does good with other dogs, but we lovingly call him ‘the fun police’ — he likes everybody to be in line and everybody to listen,” she said.
The pup’s ideal adopter would be an active person with dog experience, who would keep him moving and continue his training.

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series
Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 40 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 30 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Features Director Melissa Lampert, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
