KHTS Adopt A Pet: Nikova, Tails And Scales Animal Rescue (VIDEO)

A blind four-year-old pitbull named Nikova has been waiting almost three years for a special adopter to give her the chance to prove she’s just a regular dog.

“Nikova is a super friendly, super sweet, no-eyed pit bull,” said Haley Walsh, co-founder and CEO of Tails and Scales Animal Rescue. “She lost her sight in Sept. 2015 and ultimately had to have her eyes removed, but this doesn’t slow her down — she is still as friendly and excited as ever.”KHTS Adopt a Pet: Nikova

Tails and Scales pulled Nikova from the Downey Shelter when she still had her eyesight in 2014, and a glaucoma diagnosis left her blind less than a year later.

“After specialists after specialists, we decided it was best to have her eyes removed,” Walsh explained, noting the decision means Nikova no longer needs any specialty care or medication.

Instead of relying on her eyesight, Nikova uses her memory to navigate her foster home, remembering where there are steps, furniture, doors and more.

Though Nikova had no socialization or training when she first left the shelter, she now knows basic commands and gets along well with other dogs, kids and even cats.

“She’s really grown up as a dog and she’s super lovable,” Walsh said. “Nikova has been waiting for a home for a very long time, and we’re still hopeful she’ll find her forever home.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series

Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 40 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 30 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Features Director Melissa Lampert, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
