Throughout 2017, 56 total pets — 25 dogs and 31 cats — from eight different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita took the spotlight in search of their forever home.

While 100 percent of the 22 animals featured in 2016 have since been adopted, the 40 pets to find their forever homes this year brings the series’ adoption success rate to 79 percent overall.

One of the most memorable dogs to be featured in 2017 is Nikova, a 4-year-old pitbull from Tails and Scales Animal Rescue who lost her vision to glaucoma and ultimately had to have her eyes removed.

After waiting the majority of her life to be adopted through Tails and Scales — the rescue’s longest resident dog to date — the decision was made to feature Nikova in the series in hopes a special adopter would finally come forward.

To everyone’s surprise, Nikova gained national attention when her KHTS Adopt a Pet video and story were shared by the website IHeartDogs.com, and applications from across the country — and even internationally — flooded in.

A woman from Arizona travelled across state lines to meet Nikova, who is now finally getting her “happily ever after” in her new out-of-state forever home.

Another memorable moment for the KHTS Adopt a Pet series this year was when a group of senior cats from the Castaic Shelter were featured in a special edition Senior Spotlight.

While all five seniors to be featured have since found their forever homes, a blind 15-year-old tortie named Sofie and a 20-year-old tabby named Rascall who were by far the shelter’s most difficult to place residents were almost immediately adopted.

Despite these heartwarming success stories, a number of KHTS Adopt a Pet animals featured this past year are still patiently waiting for their forever homes, including the following:

  • 17-year-old orange tabby cat Odin from Furever Purr Rescue;
  • 10-year-old miniature schnauzer Prince from Saving Little Strays;
  • Bonded 5- and 12-year-old father/daughter chihuahuas Bonnie and Clyde from Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita;
  • 8-year-old tuxedo cat Rosie from Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary;
  • 1-year-old terrier mix Precious from Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita;
  • 3-year-old special needs shih tzu Princess from St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary;
  • 7-month-old special needs Lynx Point Siamese cat Grace, originally from the Castaic Shelter;
  • 3-year-old pitbull Meatball from Tails and Scales Animal Rescue;
  • 2-year-old orange tabby cat Pumpkin Spice from St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary;
  • 3-year-old pitbull Latte from Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary, originally from the Castaic Shelter;

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series

Every Wednesday, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 40 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 30 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Features Director Melissa Lampert, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
