This year was a busy one for the KHTS news team, covering everything from the Powerhouse fire that charred 30,000 acres in Bouquet Canyon to the death of actor Paul Walker.

A host of smaller incidents also sparked interest among readers in 2013.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies were busy responding to several serious car crashes, including one involving a Valencia High School senior and one that resulted in the death of a young woman on Sand Canyon Road.

Deputies also investigated the death of a small child in Canyon Country, the case of a “backyard butcher” who was arrested for animal cruelty and a fatal shooting in Acton.

Besides the crime beat, Einstein Academy remained a hot button issue for the SCV after city staff issued a stop work order because the charter school did not have a permit for construction at their Rye Canyon location.

CalArts closed its campus for two days in November after an outbreak of what many students feared to be food poisoning. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health investigated.
