LA County Commission For Older Adults Launches ‘LA Seniors Walk’

The Los Angeles County Commission for Older Adults has launched LA Seniors WALK: Celebrating Healthy Aging, as a means of educating older adults about the benefits of walking.

Los Angeles County has nearly 1,700,000 residents who are more than 60 years old, a number that is expected to reach 2,300,000 by the year 2020, according to LACCOA President Marilyn Fried. “It is imperative that we all do as much as we can to positively impact the health of older adults,” she said. “Walking is one of the easier ways to increase physical activity and improve physical and mental health.”

The Commission has created a special brochure that includes information about why it is important to walk, safety tips and how to have fun while exercising. LACCOA’s Commissioners will be visiting senior centers, retirement homes and other venues throughout the County to distribute information and talk with older adults about the benefits of walking.

“It is our hope that with encouragement and knowledge, those who can will make daily walking a part of their lives,” Fried said.
