La Mesa Students Learn A New Way To Use Their Voices

microphoneStudents at La Mesa Junior High are diving headlong into the world of Voice Acting, culminating with a competition that will put one lucky student on the airwaves.

The La Mesa Junior High Voice Acting competition has allowed 9 students to learn the ins and outs of the voice acting business, then put their skills to the test in a mobile recording studio.

The idea is the brainchild of Amir Soleimani who owns Voice Over There, a mobile ADR studio, which works with production companies to revoice scenes.

“This is really just to encourage kids to get an idea of what it’s like to work in a professional recording studio and have a professional voice-acting teacher,” said Soleimani.  “Then we will get them into a real studio with a microphone and get them to feel what it is like to be in a recording and doing this professionally.”

The nine contestants are paired up into teams and their recorded dialog will be placed on where the public will be able to choose a winner.

The finalists were chosen by the school and Soleimani, who based the winner on the kids who attended all the classes.

Prior to tonight’s final recording the students were giving a series of classes, held after school, where they were giving training, practice on microphones, and allowed to read scripts with sound effects.

Voice-acting professionals also came to the classes to talk to the kids and offer them pointers and tips.

“The students have been very enthusiastic about the process,” said Steve Jacobson, ASB Director at La Mesa.  “The kids are getting a chance to explore an area that they wouldn’t normally get a chance to explore.”

Soleimani has donated his time and equipment to the school and hopes to take this competition to other schools.

“I want to make it like a sporting competition, where schools compete against each other for some kind of championship,” said Soleimani.
