More than 4,000 people attended the production throughout the months of July and August at the Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons, according to Patti Finley, the play’s co-director.
The production featured a cast of 80 members, the largest amount since Canyon Theatre Guild’s inception in 1971. The cast included precocious talents from as young as 9 years old to adult cast members.
“We had 280 people audition, but we narrowed it down to 80 cast members,” Finley said. “This cast is the largest we’ve ever had at the Canyon Theatre Guild, but it was truly a pleasure to work with such a great and large cast of people. They worked together so closely, and I was especially happy to see that the cast bonded as closely as they did. ”
The score of the Canyon Theatre Guild and Santa Clarita Regional Theater’s “Les Misérables” production featured favorites such as “I Dreamed A Dream” and “On My Own” and all the songs from the original Schönberg musical score. The production also featured a live orchestra to accompany the musical-stage adaptation.
It was an ambitious endeavor for the Canyon Theatre Guild to produce a major play that is usually extravagantly budgeted. Transposing the major Broadway play into a large scale local theatre production was successfully executed.
“I had people come up to me and tell me that our production was better than the original Broadway version,” Finley said. “I couldn’t be any happier with the cast, the reaction from the audience and the turnout. It was truly superb. The entire production went beyond my expectations.”
