Las Lomas Dealt Another Blow By Legislators

Assemblyman Smyth, Councilmember Smith team up to clear up legalities on massive development.

ImageThe hotly-contested Las Lomas development proposed for hillsides between the cities of Los Angeles and Santa Clarita hit another roadblock today when Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and Los Angeles City Councilman Greig Smith asked the district attorney to investigate possible perjury on the part of developer Dan Palmer.

Smyth and Smith have also called for an investigation by the state's Attorney General and Department of Real Estate to determine if Palmer attempted to defraud landowner Fred McHaddad, who owns a majority portion of property in the proposed development.

Reached Thursday afternoon by phone, McHaddad said he had been instructed not to speak to the media, but would not divulge who gave him those instructions.

According to a joint press release, perjury is a crime punishable under Federal law by a fine, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.

Smyth said that the magnitude of the project, which was an issue when he was still serving on the Santa Clarita City Council, was one of the reasons he and Smith were asking state officials to intervene.

Smith introduced a motion to the Los Angeles City Council on Feb. 8 to stop the entire Las Lomas project until a policy decision is made by the entire Council as to Las Lomas' future inclusion within the city limits and availability of necessary resources, including water, sewer, police and fire, power and public works services.
