Phippen is represented by Santa Clarita attorney Richard Patterson, founding partner of the law firm Owen, Patterson & Owen in Valencia. The suit is the first to be filed from a victim of the Las Vegas shooting.

You can read the suit in it’s entirety here

Patterson shared with KHTS, “We learned through NBC that the Vegas assassin Stephen Paddock reportedly won $5 million dollars in 2015, that along with his other assets is a large sum. We filed the lawsuit now so the public administrator could control the assets so there could be control of the money under the umbrella of the courts for the benefit of everybody who has a claim. We are having the courts take control of the assets now so they don’t disappear before the victims receive a share.”

Patterson continued, “The Phippin family wants all of us to learn something from this tragedy. They want change. They want the industry to learn from it, the hotel and the concert business. They want more security, they want metal detectors and better visibility of emergency exits. They want safety for the public.”

Stephen Paddock, 64, described by his brother, Eric Paddock, as a multi-millionaire in a New York Times report, opened fire on an estimated 22,000 people at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival from his 32nd floor suite at Mandalay Bay on Sunday.

He killed 58 and wounded more than 500 — including a number of Santa Clarita residents — before killing himself.

Travis and John Phippen remained at the concert to help, and as a trained medic, Travis provided aid to about 14 wounded victims despite being shot in the arm himself.

John was fatally shot in the back after jumping on top of a young woman to shield her from the spray of bullets.

Still with a bullet in his arm, Travis carried his father’s body out of the “dead zone,” according to a social media post by a family member.

After finally arriving at the hospital, Travis said he refused immediate treatment because his injury was non-life threatening and others needed help more.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support John’s children.

John Phippen’s Son Files Lawsuit Against Las Vegas Shooting Gunman’s Estate

  1. Right on! This is great news!

  2. I believe that any of the victim’s family can actually open a probate in Nevada as a creditor. You don’t have to wait for the public administrator. Every single one of the living victims and the families of the deceased victim should file a claim against the madman’s estate. No amount of money can compensate for such a senseless killing, but there are families without a mother or a father etc. and the killer’s family should not benefit from his estate.

  3. Good! I’m glad he did. Bravo. Great form of Empowerment.

  4. I have been working in the Hospitality Industry for almost 14 years and we don’t let people check in with guns. How come nobody saw him carrying all the guns?
Also I read that the guy was in the hotel for several days. What happened with Housekeeping?
Whoever cleaned the room had to report anything unusual like the guns, mostly if the amount its insane like this guy had.
If by any chance, the person has a DND (Do not disturb) sign on the door, Housekeeping has the obligation to do a wellness check at the third day. That is policy of any hotel.
So, I support the families to file the lawsuit against the hotel. That should not happened.

  5. I agree a lawsuit should be filed against Mandala Bay Casino and Hotel. Vegas has been named as a special target for a decade and Hotel & Casino owners have a responsibility given they are a high profile target to exercise extra security as Steve Wynn did at his Hotel.

Steve Wynn hired ex-seal team members to asses his facility and help put in place safe guards that would not have allowed this to happen at his Hotel.

Nothing is full proof and I am a supporter of gun rights but in areas like Vegas you should not be able to have guns of this number and sort on the premises unless you are security. If the law allows carry then you should keep them locked in your car, or maybe unloaded and locked in safe while checking in.

I am sorry for your loss and for the injury caused by so many other SCV residents.
