Las Vegas Shooting: Nathalie Vanderstay Getting Ready For Return To Santa Clarita

A Santa Clarita survivor of the Las Vegas shooting is expected to be released from a Nevada hospital Monday, after being shot twice and bandaging her own wounds before a taxi cab took her to the emergency room.

Nathalie Vanderstay was separated from a group of friends at the Route 91 Harvest Festival on the Las Vegas strip when the bullets began flying.

One of the people she was with, Palmdale Fire EMT Ted Kalnas, described the chaos as overwhelming.

“That’s when mass hysteria hit,” he said. “We were stampeded by all the people in the front of us. We lost track of Nathalie, even though she was only like 10 yards away. We got bowled over.”

While Kalnas and his girlfriend, registered nurse Vedamay Bradford, were able to escape the initial rush away from the stage and ended up acting as first responders to the wounded, Vanderstay was hit.

She was shot twice, once in the leg and once in the abdomen. As a nurse at UCLA Medical Center, Vanderstay remained focused, and used her jacket as a tourniquet to slow the bleeding from her own leg wound.

From there, she climbed over a chain-link fence and began making her way down the street.

“She stumbled out onto the street and was wandering aimlessly, knowing she’d been shot but not knowing what to do,” Kalnas described.

He said Bradford had been texting and calling Vanderstay, trying to figure out where she was. But when a different voice answered her phone, the separated friends knew she had been shot.

“She was trying to reach out to Nathalie as well, but couldn’t get ahold of her. That really bothered her,” said Kalnes. “Some (woman) answered the phone, and said ‘I’m with this friend, she had been shot.’ They were in a taxi cab.”

A passing taxi had spotted Vanderstay and picked her up, driving her to a local hospital, where she underwent surgery for her bullet wounds.

More than a week later, Vanderstay’s hospital visit is coming to an end, but her troubles are not over. Originally set to be released Saturday, an infection pushed back her departure by another two days, which increased piling medical bills.

And without work for at least a month while she recovers, the nurse will have some difficulty paying.

“She’s going to be off work for a month, from what I’ve heard,” Kalnas said. “I know she’ll have quite a bit of medical bills, being there for a week.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support Vanderstay’s recovery effort and pay for some of her medical expenses. Over $20,000 has already been raised. Those interested in donating can do so here.

The fundraising page is a perfect chance for those looking to help out the victims of the tragedy to have a meaningful impact, Kalnas said.

“For those who want to give, who want to donate and don’t know how,” he said, “we would love for people to donate to Nathalie.”
