Travis Phippen is a trained medic, and upon hearing the sounds of gunfire and seeing people fall injured, he immediately started assisting other victims.

However, his father, John Phippen, would not leave Travis’ side as he attempted to aid those that had been struck or injured in the chaos.

Joining in with his son, John Phippen also began helping others, and during the volley of bullets coming from the Mandalay Bay hotel, successfully jumped on top of a young woman to shield her from danger.

John was fatally shot in the back while protecting the woman.

Travis continued to work on the wounds of others, not realizing that he too had been hit by gunfire in the arm.

“I remembered feeling something, but I didn’t realize I had been shot because my adrenaline was kicking in, and I was on autopilot,” recounted Travis Phippen. “I didn’t realize I was shot until (later when) a nurse at the hospital told me I had been hit.”

“He carried my dad, who is now deceased, out of the dead zone after being shot himself,” Nate Phippen, Travis’ brother, stated in a Facebook post. “(He was) one of (Sunday) night’s heroes who helped save 14 people’s lives. Please pray for and help our family in any way possible for medical expenses and funeral services.”

Travis remained in the hospital, but refused to have the bullet in his arm removed because it was not life threatening and others needed the help more.

“He wouldn’t allow the bullet to be removed because he wanted the other people, who needed more attention than him because of their injuries, to be treated first,” said Thomas Polucki, close friend of the Phippen family.

The bullet will remain in Travis’ arm until he returns home to Santa Clarita.

However, Travis also plans on remaining in Vegas until the coroner releases his dad’s body and he can bring him home.

A GoFundMe page has been set up here to support John’s children.
