Leading Health Ratings Company Ranks Providence Holy Cross in Top 5 Percent Nati

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center announced today that a study of quality at the nation’s 5,000 hospitals has named Providence Holy Cross Medical Center among the top 5 percent in the nation and a recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. The study conducted by HealthGrades, the leading health care ratings company, found that hospitals in the top 5 percent in the nation had mortality rates that were, on average, 27 percent lower than other hospitals, and major complication rates that were 14 percent lower. Each year, HealthGrades conducts the most comprehensive study of hospital quality in America, producing a rating for every nonfederal hospital in 28 diagnoses and procedures. Hospitals that receive the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence are those hospitals that place among the top 5 percent nationally when ratings for 26 of the 28 areas (those areas where data is available in all 50 states) are aggregated into a comprehensive score. Only 277 hospitals nationwide are recognized.
For its study, HealthGrades performed an analysis of almost 39 million Medicare hospitalization records that cover the latest three-year period, from 2002 to 2004.  The analysis is risk-adjusted to account for differences in patient populations between hospitals. In the study, HealthGrades found that Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence outperformed all other hospitals across the procedures and diagnoses studied. HealthGrades estimates that if during the time period studied all patients had gone to a Distinguished Hospital, 152,966 lives could have been saved and 21,896 post-operative complications could have been avoided. “Consumers continue to ask for more and better information to help them in their health care decision making,” said Kerry Carmody, Administrator of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. “This analysis is an apples-to-apples comparison of hospital performance by procedure.  This accomplishment reflects the diligent efforts of our Board of Directors, as well as our excellent physicians, nurses, and clinicians, and should be very comforting to area residents.”
Providence Holy Cross has attained a national reputation for quality, including being named to the “America’s Best Hospitals” list by US News and World Report magazine, “Employer of the Year” by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation; and “Best Hospital in the Valley 2005” by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal, among many others. HealthGrades has also recognized Providence Holy Cross Medical Center for exceptional clinical outcomes in two specialty areas.  The facility was named a recipient of HealthGrades 2006:
  • Pulmonary Excellence Award
  • Stroke Care Excellence Award
In addition, HealthGrades recognized Providence Holy Cross for achieving 5 Star rankings in the following:
  • Care of Respiratory Failure
  • Care of Sepsis
  • Care of Chronic Obstructed Pulmonary Disease
  • Care of Community Acquired Pneumonia
  • Bowl Obstruction
  • Percutaneous Cardiac Intervention (such as angioplasty and stent)
  • Congestive Heart Failure
