To support the thriving film industry in Santa Clarita and to help connect filmmakers to local resources and locations, city staff created FilmSantaClarita.com.
They recently redesigned the site to allow visitors and residents easily find information about film permits, location listings, prop suppliers and how to list your home as a filming location.
The city issued 368 film permits for 1,069 filming days during the 2012-13 fiscal year.
Russell Sypowicz, administrator for the Santa Clarita Film Office, said that the relationship between the city and film industry is beneficial for all involved.
Filmmakers like to come to Santa Clarita, he said, because the city is within 30 miles of Los Angeles, and many local businesses are film-friendly.
“The city council and the city as a whole have long been supportive of the film industry and have put processes in place to make Santa Clarita as film friendly as possible,” Sypowicz said, adding that the permitting process is efficient and inexpensive.
In return, the industry generates more than $22 million in economic impact yearly, and employs more than 6,000 residents.
Santa Clarita offers a variety of different settings, including desert, forest and Old West, in a small area.
“We also have varied topography that can showcase Santa Clarita as ‘Anywhere, America,’” Sypowicz said. “We’ve played anything from Washington, D.C. to the Middle East.”
Other major films that filmed scenes locally include “Django Unchained,” all three “Iron Man” films, and the newly released “Jobs,” which filmed at College of the Canyons.
