By Stephen K. Peeples

Los Angeles SEO expert Chaz Key of Nine Eye Interactive Media (http://nineeye.com) returns to Santa Clarita to focus on basic SEO and provide updates in search engine optimization techniques in a new series of free “SEO So Easy!” workshops for small business owners starting Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Key’s previous free SEO workshop series in Santa Clarita in spring 2013 was a hit with Santa Clarita Valley business owners and website developers. Now, it’s time for a refresher and an update, he said.

Get Back to Basic SEO at Chaz Key’s 2014 ‘SEO So Easy!’ Workshops

Los Angeles SEO Expert Chaz Key of Nine Yeye Interactive“The new 2014 workshops are going right back to basics,” said Key ( pictured). “We’re going to dig into on-site optimization once again, because how to best optimize still seems to be the No. 1 question I get. On-site optimization starts with the basics. People still want and need to learn basic SEO. Even veterans who attended the 2013 workshops keep asking about basic optimization, something we covered last year in the very beginning. But I’m happy to provide a refresher.”

Also critical is keeping up to date with recent changes in the SEO landscape. To learn basic SEO in 2014 increasingly involves knowing what the Bing and Yahoo! search engines are looking for, as well as staying abreast of Google’s always-evolving search criteria.

“I feel basic SEO also needs to be readdressed mainly because some things have changed,” Key said. “We’re seeing a lot of changes in internal link structure, and more emphasis on schema data that helps localize search results even more.

“We’re starting to see more social emphasis, too, with Google+ and Open Graph descriptions,” he said. “Facebook and Bing have teamed up and we know both are reading those Open Graph descriptions. We’ll get into that more as the workshops continue, every other week.”

‘Learn Basic SEO’ from the Top Down

But website developers and content producers-managers have to start with the basics and build on that foundation, Key said.

In the free ‘Learn Basic SEO’ workshop Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Key will revisit SEO essentials like meta tags, title tags, description tags, keyword tags, keyword density, and page URLs that are the most search-engine friendly.

“You have to have on-site optimization,” Key said. “If you don’t have those tags matching your content – if your title says ‘Red Widgets’ and your content talks about blue widgets, search engines get confused and your ranking will suffer badly.

“Are you using your H1 and H2 tags? Are you using images? Are they optimized, too? We’ll find out,” he said.

Key will also cover what not to do, including meta tag spamming, title tag spamming, description spamming, duplicate content and keyword stuffing, all of which can torpedo page views and rankings in search results.

If time permits, Key plans to discuss more about internal link structure, the value of XML site maps, review the SEO of a member’s website, and field questions in a Q&A at the end.

“There are no stupid questions,” Key said. “By the time you leave this workshop, you will understand the SEO basics.”

Free ‘SEO So Easy!’ Workshops in 2013 and 2014

Key designed his “SEO So Easy!” free workshops to bring together the Santa Clarita Valley business community, demystify search engine optimization, and help SCV business owners improve traffic and revenue on their local websites.

“I want to make it easier for Santa Clarita residents to shop locally online, and spend our dollars here in our own community,” Key said.

The first series covered basic search engine optimization on a page, keyword research, internal link structure, link-building and site migration using 301 redirects. The most recent two workshops in May and June 2013 focused on how to optimize WordPress websites.
