The CIF-Southern Section Division II playoff brackets have been announced and all four Santa Clarita Foothill League teams have made it.
This much is no surprise…
What is a surprise, however, is the way they were positioned in the brackets.
While most prognosticators might think No. 4 Canyon’s surprising victory over No. 3 Hart would land them on the opposite side of the brackets from No. 1 Mission Viejo, the CIF didn’t think so.
Instead the Cowboys (9-1) are in the same half as the Diablos and the Indians, as last week’s Nos. 1, 2 and 3 teams have been grouped together.
“It’s interesting,” said Canyon head coach Harry Welch. “It certainly makes things more difficult.”
Particularly when the road to Mission Viejo has been the road to playoff mortality for the Cowboys over the last couple of seasons.
Last year, Canyon lost to the Diablos in its first trip to a CIF semifinal in 13 years. Two years ago, Mission Viejo ended the Cowboys’ season in the quarterfinal round.
