Liberty Tax Service is offering free tax preparation to educators in the Santa Clarita Valley between Sunday, March 2 and Saturday, March 8. 

Tax season is well underway, and with less than two months left to file taxes, Liberty Tax Service is giving back to educators in the Santa Clarita Valley, such as teachers, daycare workers and all school staff, during “Educator Appreciation Days.”

Between Sunday, March 2 and Saturday, March 8, all local school employees, including bus drivers, will be able to come into one of Liberty Tax’s locations in Saugus and Canyon Country for free tax preparation.

“Employees of our educational system deserve all the help they can get,” said Ritu Khadiya, owner of Liberty Tax Service in Santa Clarita. “We have Appreciation Days to show our respect for everyone in our education system. The future of our country and our economy depends greatly on their hard work and dedication.”

Only first-time customers are eligible for the offer.

Tax laws affecting teachers and other educators this year include the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, which extends a teacher’s classroom expense deduction through 2013. Previously, the deduction was set to expire in 2011.

The law allows educators to deduct up to $250 for classroom supplies they purchased out of pocket.

Teachers in grades K-12, school instructors, counselors, principals and aides who work at least 900 hours in either a public or private school are eligible for the deduction.
