Liquor Store Robber Gets 12 Years In Prison

A Newhall resident plead to his second felony strike in Superior Court today and was sentenced to 12 years in state prison.

Oscar Omar Labra was arrested in September after he was recognized by the clerk of a Canyon Country liquor store he held up in January. He reportedly went into the store, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money, then tried to leave the store with the currency.

Sheriff’s investigators released a video of the incident where a co-worker of the clerk narrowly escaped being shot after he hit Labra over the head with a bottle as he left the store. Labra had difficulty handling the rifle as he left the scene and no one was hurt.

Despite the video and pictures of Labra circulating in the community, resolution didn’t come until eight months later when the clerk who had been held up was driving down Sierra Highway and spotted Labra standing at a bus stop at Canyon Park Drive. They called sheriff’s deputies, who arrested Labra without incident.

After Labra’s extended stay in prison, he will be deported to his home country of Mexico.
