Weekend event’s aim was to make reading exciting
On Saturday, Newhall Park was the site of the Literacy and Arts Festival. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, the festival was brought about to get kids from third grade through twelfth grade excited about reading.
The event was highlighted by dramatic storytelling and re-enactments. Book related crafts and activities also kept the kids entertained and taught them a thing or two.
In addition, a writing contest was held for the students. Awards were divided into four categories: cartoon, poetry, editorial and short story. Entries in each category were judged by grade level: grades 3 through 5; 6 through 8; and 9 through 12.
