You are invited to connect with “plein air” artists in Pico Canyon
Santa Clarita Artists' Association (SCAA) will meet for a plein air (French for “in the open air”) paint out on Monday, August 18, at 8:30-11:30 am (to beat the heat), at Pico Canyon County Park, 25600 Pico Canyon Road in Stevenson Ranch 91381. This park is very special as it is now the home of “Old Glory”, the 400-year old Oak tree made famous by tree sitter/tree savior, John Quigley in a 71-day ordeal in 2002. The views include a lovely craggy cliff across Pico Canyon Road, the distant mountains surrounding Pico Canyon, oak trees with paths and finally "Old Glory".
Here are a few general helpful hints: Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, snack, bug spray, trash bag (we are good scouts and pack out more trash then in) and your paint gear. For your comfort, keep your painting equipment to a minimum. A small sketch pad to draw your composition saves time. Some painters find a viewfinder helpful (even an empty slide sleeve). A smaller canvas board (6” X 8”, 8” X 10”) is preferable for plein air. A camera is a good tool to find your composition and to shoot your subject. This reference photo and your plein air painting will give you enough information to create a larger studio painting. Non-members and photographers are also welcomed.
Directions: Heading west on Lyons, drive past Stevenson Ranch Road and the park is on your left. You actually drive past the park and make a U Turn. Please note this is not the park at the end of Pico Canyon Road. Parking is free. If you have any questions email Laura Wambsgans at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 661) 259-0696.
Monthly meetings of the Santa Clarita Artists' Association are held at the Westfield Town Center Community Room, between JC Penny and the Food Court; and are informative and inspirational. Non-members are also welcomed and may attend their first meeting for free. For information about attending or joining, please contact the membership chairperson: Dianne Foderaro, email: email@example.com; or visit the SCAA webpage at: http://www.santaclaritaartists.org/.
