Kim Strauss, author of Kalan the Mighty Warrior has been awarded the prestigious Editors Choice award from iUniverse. The award means big things for the book, which has already enjoyed rave reviews.
The award does signal some exciting potential for the book though, which is now eligible for the Publisher’s Choice, which would represent the highest honor at iUniverse. If Kalan the Mighty Warrior wins that, it would be re-printed with the new distinction, and earn front table status at retailers such as Barnes and Noble and Borders.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to get this award for my first book,” said Strauss.
The book was a challenge for Strauss, who has suffered from ADD his whole life.
“I was diagnosed about 13 years ago, and they gave me medication for it that worked really well. But then it started to give me headaches and I just decided that if I’ve worked through it this long, I can continue,” said Strauss.
He recalls a time where he was doing a reading for Kalan the Mighty Warrior, and he met a child who came to meet him. The child also suffered from ADD, and was inspired by Strauss’ success.
Strauss commented, “I certainly understand how kids with Attention Deficit can be harassed and looked down upon, but the fact is most children with a disorder like this are actually very bright.”
It wasn’t the first time Strauss has touched the lives of children in a positive way. He often does readings and other events for schools, with three more coming up at Valley View Elementary and Newhall Elementary.
Kalan the Mighty Warrior is already headed for his next adventure, with Strauss working on book two, as well as another children’s book that his son wrote.
