California Highway Patrol officers ramped up their enforcement efforts and made 20 driving under the influence arrests over a three-day holiday weekend.
From 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday, the officers patrolled the highways watching for drunk drivers. In 2008, they made 32 arrests over a four-day period (because July 4 was on a Friday) and had one fatality.
While Newhall area motorways were relatively safe, a Newhall man lost his life in Malibu on Sunday when his car went over the side of the road.
Michael Mutz, 41, was driving a 2003 Honda four-door southbound on Malibu Canyon Road when for unknown reasons, he crossed the double yellow line into oncoming lanes and continued straight until the car fell over the side. Mutz sustained fatal injuries on the way down, prior to the vehicle coming to rest a few hundred feet down from the roadway. He did not appear to have been wearing a seat belt.
