Local Elementary School Receives Science Grant

khts_schools_chalkboardFor the last few years Valencia Valley Elementary School watched as other schools in the Newhall School District raised funds and built science labs. This year dedicated school parents, who either belong to the PTA or are involved in the school’s foundation, decided to focus their efforts on constructing a science lab of their own.

The space will be equipped with science laboratory tables, water service, technology to enhance learning, scientific equipment and supplies for use by Valencia Valley students so they can engage in hands-on science experiences within a laboratory setting.

Dr. Marc Winger, superintendent of the Newhall School District, sought support for this part of the project from The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation.

In late November the Newhall Foundation responded with a one-time grant of $10,000 that will enable the school to complete a significant portion of the construction of the lab setting. The Valencia Valley PTA has also generously agreed to match funds to fulfill Valencia Valley’s dream of a science lab.

“We have wonderful parents who work hard to make this lab a reality for our students,” said Ken Hintz, principal of Valencia Valley School. “Their efforts were supported even further with this grant and we are very grateful to the Newhall Foundation. This opportunity will provide our children with enriching learning experiences in science.”

“Newhall School District has been the recipient of The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation grants in the past,” said Winger. “Generous grants from the Foundation in the past have allowed us to expand our outstanding instrumental music program, stock libraries at our new schools and fund a science lab at several schools. The District has a proven record of reasonable requests, consistent with the Foundation’s mission, and we exercise fiscal responsibility in the expenditure of the funds. We hoped the Foundation would help us again, and, once again, they’ve come through.”

The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation is an organization with the goal of supporting charitable, educational and cultural activities in California. Its mission is “To improve the cultural and social life within the geographical areas associated with the career and legacy of California pioneer Henry Mayo Newhall.”
