Reneé Kaehny, a hair stylist in Santa Clarita, was looking for a way to help local nonprofits, and thought that hair extensions were the perfect way to do it.
Kaehny started in 2011 by selling hair extensions to raise money for Libriti Greene, a 5-year-old from Stevenson Ranch who had been diagnosed with Leukemia. The fundraiser took off.
“We thought we’d raise just a little bit of money. We raised thousands,” Kaehny said. “People came out of the woodwork.”
Now called Extensions of Love, the program also raised money for the Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley and their High Heel-A-Thon.
This year, the proceeds from the hair extensions will benefit the SCV Youth Project, for which Kaehny serves as a board member. The Project offers free peer mentoring, crisis intervention and support groups that address issues such as drugs, sex, and depression.
Kim Goldman, executive director of the SCV Youth Project said that any money raised would go into reserve until the school year starts.
“Any proceeds that we raise go towards providing our services, which are counseling services” Goldman said.
Hair extensions are $10 each in the form of a cash or check donation to the Youth Project and will be available until the end of August.
