Santa Clarita Runners host charity run/walk for hunger.scrunnersbeast
Perhaps chivalry is dead. Perhaps the days of knights and dragons are behind us. But this weekend, you could have a chance to venture into the wilderness, conquer the Beast, and come to the aid of the local townsfolk. The Santa Clarita Runners will host their 3rd Annual Beast Run/Walk to benefit the SCV Food Pantry. Their attempt to complete the famously difficult local trail begins at 7:30 a.m. December 12.

The Beast is a dirt and gravel fire road lurking in the hills above Whitney Canyon Park. Runners will meet at the park-and-ride at the dead end of Newhall Ave. on the south side of the 14 freeway. The trail is 9.72 miles round trip and includes 2,764 feet of elevation gain.

Oranges, water, and bagels will be available at the base to revive the combatants on their return.

All runners will receive an “I Conquered The Beast 2009″ t-shirt proclaiming their victory. Registration costs $20 and runners are encouraged to sign up early to reserve their shirt.

Because the course is difficult, the Runners advise participants to run or walk with a group and take care to avoid over-exertion. Indoorsy types can always sponsor others to run, as any and all donations will be accepted.
