Seth Winger joins 99 other students competing for one of nine Scholarships 

Seth Winger, a senior this fall at William S. Hart High School has been named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist.  Winger was selected as the only California representative by the staff of the California Golden Boys State Program which was held last week in Sacramento. The announcement of this accomplishment was made on the last day of the American Legion-sponsored week long mock government experience attended by close to 1,000 boys from across California.

 

In making the announcement, the selection officials said Winger was named as a national finalist on the basis of academics and school and community involvement. As a finalist, Winger joins 99 other students from around the United States in competing for one of nine scholarships, each expected to be worth $20,000.

 

Winger has maintained a grade point average of 4.6 at Hart High, serves as editor in chief of his school’s newspaper, volunteers for Safe Rides, and tutors students in math and science.  He is in the process of deciding on a college to attend in fall 2007.  He was selected to attend Boys State through an interview process and was one of two representatives from Hart High School.

“Attending Boys State was a fantastic experience,” Winger said.  “Learning about government and meeting boys from all over California would have been enough.  But being named the only student to represent the state in this national scholarship competition is beyond anything I expected.” The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung in recognition of the sacrifice and commitment of the United States servicemen and women who served during the Korean War.  Eligible students must be descendents of wartime veterans who served their country honorably.  Winger’s grandfather, Robert Winger, served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II.

 

Members of the Golden Boys State Program selection committee said the selection process was difficult.  The applicants were some of the best-qualified students in the state and the competition was keen.
