Urbina recently sat down with Amber Raskin from SCVI Charter on his Life Leadership with Alex Urbina show on KHTS AM-1220 to discuss the way we teach our children.
Some parents need to go “back to school and relearn some of these morals and values,” said Urbina.
Raskin explains that morals and values need to be “explicitly taught and modeled.”
It’s not just about what parents say. It also has so much to do with how the parents act, according to Urbina.
“They see what we do more than they hear what we say,” said Urbina.
It is important to invite kids to act in an appropriate way, not demand it, according to Urbina.
Transitioning from a manager parenting style to a coaching parenting style can include rephrasing how you approach them.
“Ask them open ended questions that will help lead them down the right path,” said Urbina.
Urbina says he often has to question the parents with: “Do you think that you could be getting in the way of them discovering their own personal power?”
“It’s hard for some parents to understand because no one likes to be told that they are controlling or that they could be a part of the problem,” said Urbina.
