Local Officials Get High Marks From Jarvis Taxpayers Association

news_politicsThe Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has come out with their 2009 Legislative Report Card, and all three state legislators representing the Santa Clarita Valley were given an A rating.

The Association ranks legislators based on how they voted on bills that impacted taxation in the state.

State Senators Tony Strickland and George Runner each received some of the highest ratings, while Assemblyman Cameron Smyth nabbed an A rating for the third consecutive year.

“I am honored to have received the top score in the State Senate by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association,” said Senator Strickland. “It comes as no surprise that the majority of my colleagues received “F” grades because they treat California taxpayers like their personal ATM machine.”

President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, Jon Coupal commented, “The fact that Tony received a solid A grade and had one of the highest scores in the Legislature should come as no surprise. He has always been a staunch defender of taxpayers and we count on him to advance a fiscally responsible agenda that California so desperately needs.”

Assemblyman Smyth says he cherishes the vote of confidence from the Association.

“I’m proud to be recognized for my commitment to protect Californians from higher taxes,” said Smyth. “The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is the preeminent defender of taxpayers in California, and to receive such high marks from them is a real honor.”

“Californians already shoulder one of the highest tax burdens in the nation,” Smyth added. “Since coming to Sacramento, I have been committed to not raising taxes. We are in the middle of the worst economic downturn in decades, yet there are still people advocating for tax increases. Raising taxes was a bad idea in February, and it remains a bad idea today.”
